President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officiated the ground-breaking ceremony for the largest copper foil factory in Southeast Asia, PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia, in Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate Gresik, East Java, on Tuesday, June 20th 2023. Attended by The Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Menko Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir and Chairman of The Board Hailiang Group Cao Jian Guo.
PT Hailiang Nova Material Indonesia is a subsidiary of Zhejiang Hailiang Co., Ltd., one of the world's largest and leading non-ferrous metal processing companies with a network of 21 factories in Asia, America, and Europe. The 22nd factory is currently under construction in Indonesia Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Gresik, on an area of 19.6 hectares.
President Joko Widodo explained that progress in the construction of PT Freeport Indonesia’s smelter has reached more than 72% and is expected to be completed by May 2024. If the company operates according to the target, we no longer export raw materials, and job opportunities exist in the country. The results of PT Freeport Indonesia that are in the same environment will be able to be absorbed so that they become a finished or half-finished product that will later be used as an electric car battery or in the electric industry itself.
The government will provide full support for accelerating licensing and tax holidays. In addition, the plant is also expected to create around 1,920 jobs, of which 95% are residents.
With large copper reserves and development obligations, the smelter will require huge capital to attract investment in the manufacture of electric cars. Lead, copper, nickel, cobalt, and bauxite hybridization strategies must be integrated to create an ecosystem of electric cars, lithium batteries, and other technologies.
Conventional cars will be left behind and headed for electric cars, and electric car factories will search for and invest in Indonesia because all the materials are there. If everything goes well in the country, there is added value at home, and job opportunities in our country will send us to a developed country in the next 10 - 15 years," said the President.
