Gresik SEZ, March 17, 2025 – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) Precious Metal Refinery (PMR) at the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) in Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This milestone advances Indonesia’s mineral downstreaming program, strengthens the mining industry’s value chain, and supports national economic sovereignty.
Advancing Downstreaming and Adding Value to Natural Resources
PTFI’s PMR, the world’s largest hydrometallurgy facility, processes anode slime to produce internationally certified gold and silver. The refinery aligns with Indonesia’s downstreaming policy, replacing raw mineral exports with high-value processed goods.
President Prabowo praised the facility as a leap forward in Indonesia’s industrial independence: “This refinery proves our ability to not only mine but also refine our natural resources, adding value for the nation.”
With PMR’s operations, JIIPE SEZ now hosts Indonesia’s only integrated precious metal ecosystem. The project is supported by PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) to strengthen the national precious metal supply chain.
Economic and Industrial Impact
The PMR’s launch brings significant benefits:
✔ Boosts mineral value through domestic processing.
✔ Creates thousands of local jobs.
✔ Increases Gresik’s regional revenue (PAD).
✔ Drives downstream industries for domestic and export markets.
Bambang Soetiono, JIIPE’s President Director, stated, “PMR solidifies JIIPE SEZ as a globally competitive hub for precious metal downstreaming.”
Sustainability and Future Investment
As a National Strategic Project, PMR adopts eco-friendly technology to support green energy transitions and attract global investment. JIIPE aims to become Southeast Asia’s largest precious metal hub, elevating Indonesia’s global competitiveness.
The refinery’s inauguration marks a historic step in Indonesia’s resource management. Synergy among the government, PTFI, ANTAM, and JIIPE will drive national economic growth and public welfare.
